Keep it Clean! Manage On-farm Storage to Reduce Risk
The two biggest factors to consider when storing your barley this year are moisture and temperature. Before your barley goes into the bin, ensure it has been dried to an optimum moisture level. You should continually check the bins to monitor the temperature after storing.
Barley farmers should ensure that their barley is kept dry and cool, well below 10°C.
If your barley reaches high moisture conditions when stored, it risks forming Ochratoxin A (OTA), a potent, naturally occurring mycotoxin. OTA can be a risk to market access as countries can have different maximum allowable limits of OTA in grain.
