Planning Ahead For Potential Herbicide Shortages
By Mitchell Japp, MSc, PAg
Concerns have been raised about potential shortages of key herbicides for 2022. Last week, a letter from Bayer has been widely circulated indicating potential supply issues for glyphosate due to supply chain issues. While it remains unclear to what extent shortages may affect the growing season, there are enough indications out there to begin planning now for potential herbicide shortages.
One resource currently available, from our friends at Sask Wheat, is their Wheat Profit podcast episode Managing Herbicide Shortages with Eric Johnson and Tom Wolf. Take a minute or two and read the show notes associated with the episode for a quick overview.
If you prefer reading over listening, Tom Wolf has an article on Sprayers101.com, Dealing with Pesticide Shortages in 2022. The article covers some great agronomic options for managing with reduced herbicides, as well as some sprayer and spray system improvements that can help to minimize losses and waste.
