Meet Our Staff: Serra McSymytz, Communications Manager
Serra joined SaskBarley in February, 2024.
Serra grew up close to agriculture her whole life. Although a town kid from Wynyard, SK, her dad farmed as part of a machinery co-op and certified seed operation at Dafoe, SK. In later years they also operated a grain elevator and export company that sold pulses and special crops to customers across the globe.
Serra’s appreciation for the farming community was strengthened when she went to the University of Saskatchewan to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing from the Edwards School of Business with a focus on agri-business. With an interest in marketing and the pulse industry she became a Grain Buyer for Legumex Walker in Saskatoon after completing her degree. She went on to purchase peas, lentils, chickpeas, Canary seed, fabas and flax from producers across the south-west side of the province for a couple years and enjoyed interacting with her farm customers and getting to know the industry in a more direct way.
Her position with Walkers bled into a communications and tradeshow support role and, after realizing that that side of marketing allowed her to flex her creativity more, she left to join a local agriculture communications and management firm before starting her own AG-communications company. Serra has spent the past 8 years helping AG companies, organizations and non-profits in Saskatchewan, and across Canada, write messaging and craft communications that speak to their unique customers, the modern producer.
Serra now lives in Saskatoon with her husband Thomas and two kids Ayellyn (5) and Ripley (3). She joined SaskBarley in the middle of a very busy February this year. She looks forward to learning more about barley production so she can help the organization better serve it’s producers with quality, timely information and key production tips to ensure success in every field.
