Every disease rating in the SaskSeed® Guide has an origin story — one that begins years before you put the seed in the ground. In this episode of The Barley Bin, host Mitchell Japp traces barley disease resistance all the way back to its source: the nursery plots, lab screens, breeding crosses, and wild barley germplasm that turn a research idea into a resistance rating you can act on.
We start at the farm gate. East-Central Saskatchewan producer Gord Moellenbeck — a SaskBarley director who’s grown malt barley for nearly 40 years — explains why the disease package comes before yield when every acre has to make malt quality.
