Fluopyram Now Available for Barley in Canada
Fluopyram is a relatively new product now available for barley farmers in Canada. Selling under the trade name, Prosaro Pro, fluopyram is packaged with prothioconazole and tebuconazole. This product offers a multi-group option (groups 3 and 7) with Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) suppression, in addition to management of several leaf diseases, and is one of very few products with registered efficacy against ergot.
Keen observers may recall from previous years that the active ingredient fluopyram has been on Keep it Clean’s Product Advisory. An amber or red warning on the Product Advisory means that the product is registered for use within Canada, but using the product will limit the ability to sell grain treated with the product.
The Keep it Clean Product Advisory flags products where key export markets have a maximum residue limit (MRL) that is too low to ensure that the limit can be reliably met. These differences arise from misalignment between MRL standards between Canada and the importing nations.
Thanks to significant efforts from the proponent, Bayer Crop Science, MRL reviews in two key export markets for malt barley and malted barley resulted in adjustments to their MRLs for this product. As a result of those adjustments, Prosaro Pro (with fluopyram) is now an option for all barley farmers in Canada.
Keep it Clean provides a good overview of the current situation, but grain buyers maintain their own declaration lists. When using a new product, always check with your buyer in advance to ensure they have not flagged the product on their own designation lists.
Check out the product in the Saskatchewan Guide to Crop Protection (page 566), and/or review the product label for application instructions.
