2024 Enhanced Barley Variety Trial Results – Yorkton, SK
Get the latest insights from the 2024 Enhanced Barley Variety Trials in Yorkton, SK. This project is managed by Suncrest College and the East Central Research Foundation.
In this video, trial coordinator Mike Hall breaks down key trial results of up-and-coming malt varieties AAC Prairie and CDC Churchill vs. new feed varieties CDC Durango AB Wrangler. Insights include: standard and enhanced nitrogen treatments, Plant Growth Regulator (PGR) applications, and fungicide efficacy. Learn how these trials impact barley yield, quality, and management decisions for farmers looking to optimize their production strategies.
Key Findings:
- Newer varieties like Synergy need more nitrogen than older ones.
- PGR significantly reduced crop height and lodging at most sites, but only increased yield at Yorkton (by 11.4%).
- Fungicide had little effect on disease but increased yield at Yorkton (14.8%) and Melfort (4%).
- Combining PGR + fungicide at Yorkton boosted yield by 28%.
- Enhanced nitrogen rates mostly increased grain protein, not yield.
- Durango (feed) was generally the highest-yielding variety except under drought at Swift Current.
